Local governance in Ffestiniog has evolved over time to meet the needs of its community. The journey began with the establishment of Bwrdd Lleol Ffestiniog in 1879, which served as a local board responsible for various community matters until 1894. In 1895, this evolved into Cyngor Dinesig Ffestiniog, marking a transition to a town council structure, which continued its service to the community until 1974. Following the reorganization brought about by the Local Government Act 1972, Cyngor Tref Ffestiniog was established in 1974 and has continued to represent the interests of Ffestiniog’s residents to the present day.
Cyngor Tref Ffestiniog is responsible for various aspects of local governance and community services in Blaenau Ffestiniog and the surrounding area. Some of our key functions include:
Local Planning: The town council reviews and comments on planning applications within our jurisdiction, ensuring that new developments align with local needs and regulations.
Community Amenities: We manage and maintain local amenities such as parks, playgrounds, and public spaces, ensuring they meet the needs of residents. The Town Council is responsible for all aspects of 9 playing fields namely equipment, maintenance, cleaning, emptying bins, grass cutting with some being leased from Cyngor Gwynedd. The Town Council is responsible for the War Memorials at Ffestiniog and Rhiwbryfdir. The Town Council has also developed an area of land near Tai Peniel as a community orchard.
Community Events and Activities: Organizing or supporting events and activities that promote community engagement, cultural enrichment, and social cohesion within our town. Including a local ‘Fun in the Park’ day held in each August.
Representing Resident Interests: We act as a liaison between residents and higher levels of government, advocating for the needs and interests of the community in discussions and decision-making processes.
Environmental and Heritage Conservation: Taking initiatives to preserve and enhance the natural environment, heritage sites, and cultural landmarks within the town. The Diffwys Fountain in the centre of town was built by the old Chamber of Commerce and presented as a gift to the Town Council several years ago. The Town Council is responsible for all aspects of the fountain – cleaning, water, electricity, and maintenance. The Town Council is responsible for everything to do with the Diffwys Train engine, it has been renovated by Ffestiniog Railway during the Town Centre Scheme.
Community Services: Providing and supporting various local services such as:
- Arranges and pays for an annual report on nearly 100 miles of public footpaths and their condition.
- The Town Council is responsible for cleaning and maintenance of 12 bus shelters in the area.
- The Town Council operates a CCTV system in the town with cameras located in various locations and works closely with the local police.
- The Town Council is now responsible for all the salt bins in the area.
